Bass drums are usually made from one bit of tree trunk, usually mango or cedar, which can be hollowed out by both lathe or hand. Older, more substantial drums ended up product of the dense but light weight cottonwood tree which is never uncovered today. Some bass drum shells are created of maple ply-Wooden, others have a barrel stave construction.
